2nd Annual César Chávez Day of Service and Learning

The Recuerda a César Chávez Committee, in conjunction with the New Mexico Commission on Community Volunteerism, We Serve/New Mexico, and La Plazita Institute, is both excited and humbled to host the 2nd Annual Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the La Plazita Gardens (Bernalillo County Open Space) in Albuquerque’s South Valley. On this day, the RCCC will welcome almost 300 students from local elementary, middle and high schools to participate in a variety of different hands-on learning activities: tour of the historic gardens and cold frame, planting seeds, creation of worm compost bins, landscaping, and painting of a mural. In preparation for this day we will be providing participating schools with a "what to expect/how to prepare your students" guide, along with educational material that includes: a booklet about the life of César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and the UFW, as well as curriculum suggestions.

Students will also have the exciting opportunity to hear our honored guest speakers, County Commissioner Art de la Cruz and Albino Garcia, Executive Director of La Plazita Institute.
